How to make yourself admin (ownerid and moderatorid)

Admin in Rust is granted by SteamID, from the server console: the panel console, RCON, or the terminal window on a self-hosted server. It cannot be done from the in-game F1 console until you already have admin.

ownerid 76561198000000000 "Aaron" "server owner"
server.writecfg
  • ownerid <steamid64> "name" "reason" gives full admin (owner). The name and reason are labels for your own records; they do not have to match the Steam name.
  • moderatorid <steamid64> "name" "reason" gives moderator, which can kick, ban and use most admin tools but cannot change server convars.
  • removeowner <steamid64> and removemoderator <steamid64> take it away again.
  • server.writecfg saves the change to users.cfg in your server identity folder. Skip it and the admin is gone at the next restart. If you are hunting for the users.cfg location, it is server/<identity>/cfg/users.cfg.

Your SteamID64 is the 17-digit number starting 7656119; you can find it on your Steam profile URL or with a SteamID lookup site. After running the command, disconnect and reconnect to the server for it to apply. On RSH panel hosting there is an admin field in the panel that writes these lines for you.

Vanilla has no god mode

Rust Dedicated Server ships no god command. God mode, vanish and most quality-of-life admin tools come from plugins such as Godmode, Vanish and Admin Radar on uMod. See the plugins guide.

Movement and teleport commands

These run from the in-game F1 console once you have admin. Player names can be partial; SteamIDs always work.

CommandWhat it does
noclipToggles noclip flight for you. Client command, admin only.
teleport "player"Teleports you to the named player.
teleport2me "player"Teleports the named player to you.
teleport "player1" "player2"Teleports player1 to player2.
teleportpos "x,y,z"Teleports you to exact world coordinates.
teleport2markerTeleports you to the marker you placed on the map.
teleport2deathTeleports you to where you last died.
teleportany <entity>Teleports you to the nearest entity of that type, for example teleportany cargoship.
spectate "player"Spectates a player. Run respawn to leave spectate.

Spawning items and entities

CommandWhat it does
inventory.give <item> <amount>Gives you an item by short name, for example inventory.give rifle.ak 1 or inventory.give wood 1000.
inventory.giveto "player" <item> <amount>Gives an item to another player.
inventory.giveall <item> <amount>Gives the item to everyone online.
inventory.giveid <itemid> <amount>Same as give, but by numeric item ID.
inventory.givebp <item>Gives you the blueprint for an item.
inventory.resetbpResets your own blueprints.
entity.spawn <prefab>Spawns an entity at your position by prefab name.

Item short names are the ones in our Rust item database; prefab names are the long assets/prefabs/... paths and are easiest to copy from a plugin or the Rust wiki rather than typed from memory.

Kicking, banning and muting

CommandWhat it does
kick "player" "reason"Kicks a player with a message they will see.
kickall "reason"Kicks everyone. Useful right before a restart.
banid <steamid> "name" "reason" [duration]Bans by SteamID. The duration is optional and in seconds.
unban <steamid>Lifts a ban.
banlistPrints the ban list.
mute "player" / unmute "player"Chat mute and unmute. mutelist shows who is muted.
skipqueueid <steamid>Lets a player bypass the join queue. removeskipqueue reverses it.
users / players / statusLists connected players with IDs, ping and connection time.
server.combatlogPrints the combat log, the same one players see, for checking a kill report.
say "message"Sends a message to everyone from SERVER.

Bans are saved to bans.cfg in the identity folder. Run server.writecfg after banning if you want to be sure it is on disk before a restart.

Weather, time and world commands

CommandWhat it does
env.time <0-24>Sets the time of day. env.time 12 is midday.
env.day, env.month, env.yearSet the in-game date, which drives seasonal events.
weather.rain <0-1>Forces rain. -1 returns it to automatic.
weather.fog <0-1>Forces fog. -1 to reset.
weather.wind <0-1>Forces wind. -1 to reset.
world.rendermapRenders a high-resolution PNG of the current map into the server folder, handy for your Discord.
world.monumentsPrints the monuments on the current map.
entity.deleteby <steamid>Deletes every entity a player placed. The cleanest way to remove a griefer's build.

Server settings you will change most

These are convars rather than one-off commands: set them once and run server.writecfg so they persist. All of them can also go in the start line as +name value.

ConvarDefaultWhat it does
server.hostnameMy Untitled Rust ServerThe name in the server browser.
server.description(none)The description players see. Put your wipe schedule here.
server.url / server.headerimage(none)Website link and the browser header image.
server.maxplayers500Player cap. Set it to what your RAM supports.
server.seed / server.worldsize1337 / 4500Map seed and size. Only read when a new map generates.
server.pvefalseTurns off player-versus-player damage. See the private and PvE server guide.
server.saveinterval600Seconds between automatic saves.
decay.upkeep / decay.scaletrue / 1Whether upkeep is on, and how fast decay runs.
craft.instantfalseInstant crafting for everyone. Common on build servers.
server.radiationtrueRadiation at monuments on or off.
server.tags(none)Server browser tags, comma separated: weekly, vanilla,eu.
server.censorplayerlisttrueHides the Steam player list to make stream sniping harder.

Saving, restarting and stopping

  • server.save forces a save now. Run it before a restart or a risky change.
  • server.writecfg writes every changed convar and the user lists to disk.
  • restart <seconds> starts a countdown that players see, then restarts. restart 300 gives five minutes.
  • quit saves and shuts the server down.
  • server.stop "reason" stops the server with a message.

A map wipe is not a command. You delete the .map and .sav files in the identity folder while the server is stopped, or change the seed, and the next boot generates a fresh world. On panel hosting the wipe button does exactly that, with a blueprint wipe as a tick box. The timing is covered in the force wipe schedule.

This page covers the commands that run a server day to day. The complete searchable list of every convar and command, all 1,800 of them, is on our RCON and console command reference.

FAQ

Questions we get a lot

From the server console run ownerid with your SteamID64, a name and a reason, then server.writecfg. Reconnect to the server and you will have admin. Use moderatorid for a lower level of access.

In your server identity folder: server//cfg/users.cfg. It is written by server.writecfg and holds the ownerid and moderatorid lines.

Not in vanilla. God mode comes from plugins such as Godmode on uMod, installed through Oxide or Carbon.

With admin, open the F1 console and run teleport followed by the player's name in quotes. teleport2me brings them to you instead.

inventory.give followed by the item short name and amount, for example inventory.give scrap 1000. Use inventory.giveto to give to another player.

banid followed by their SteamID64, a name, a reason and an optional duration in seconds. unban lifts it and banlist shows current bans.

No. Console Edition servers are managed through the in-game community server settings rather than a console. These commands are for PC servers.
